Gustavo Castillo’s mastery of the medium is apparent. His mastery of the nuance united abstract and representational imagery. His earlier works brought order to seemingly random arrangement of palm fronds or grape leaves by building on a strong but well-concealed arrangement of abstract elements. In his current paintings, the abstract foundation underlying his work has been brought center stage. His images shift effortlessly from the familiar shapes and colors of pears and mangos to near-pure abstract interactions of form and color in a way that is both playful and deeply satisfying.
